What are the differences between CPAP and BiPAP Machines?

May 27, 2015

Sleep apnea is a common condition that can be relieved with the use of a positive airway pressure (PAP) device.  There are several kinds of PAP machines, and Americare Respiratory Services carries top of the line brands known to provide the best therapy for sleep apnea.  CPAP and BiPAP machines are the most common types of equipment used to regulate breathing while sleeping. So, what are the differences?

CPAP versus BiPAP

CPAP stands for continuous positive airway pressure.  BiPAP stands for bilevel positive airway pressure.  As you might expect, CPAP machines delivers a constant flow or pressurized air and the BiPAP machine can adjust to deliver two levels of pressurized air.  Your doctor will be the one to determine which device is right for you based on your symptoms and the severity of your condition.

CPAP Machines

Even though a CPAP machine has only one pressure setting, some can gradually increase the pressure level to help you fall asleep.  The pressure will start out low and increase as you fall deeper asleep until the desired pressure level is achieved.

BiPAP and VPAP Machines

BiPAP machines with two pressure settings – high and low – will maintain a high pressure when you inhale and a low pressure when you exhale.  This can help make your sleep apnea treatment easy to tolerate while sleeping.  Some BiPAP machines can automatically adjust to your breathing rhythm with a variable range of pressure.  These are called VPAP machines, and they are made by ResMed.  Americare Respiratory Services carries all of the latest products from ResMed.

Sleep Apnea Treatment

Sleep apnea causes you to stop breathing suddenly because your airway collapses.  The CPAP and BiPAP machines force your airway to stay open all night long with gentle air pressure.  These sleep machines can be life-saving devices, so it is critical that you get the right product.
